Mini-Blog: "It is Well": The story Behind the Words

August 11, 2013

If you do not know the story behind the words to the beloved hymn, "It Is Well", you need to!  If you already know the story, then take a minute to step in writer's shoes and re-read these beautiful lyrics.

"It Is Well" was written in 1873 by Horatio Spafford.  He wasn't an aspiring composer.  He was a husband and a dad and a business man and a strong Christian.  He was a wealthy lawyer that tragically lost his youngest son.  He then lost most everything that he owned in the Great Chicago Fire.  He decided to take a vacation with his wife and four daughters.  He sent them ahead and soon got word that their ship had wrecked and all four daughters had drowned.  He then set sail to meet his wife and wrote the amazing words, "It is well with my soul."

I don't know about you, but I feel that most of us would be a HOT MESS after all of that.  Bless this poor family's hearts!!  Amazingly, he turned a true tragedy into a heartfelt message, that would witness to us over a century later, about the peace of God and the assurance that "whatever the lot...it is well with my soul."

This man shines with Christ's love.  This man is beautifully broken!

XOXO,

Jenny and Anna
